During one year, 5-8% of the population will suffer from major depression. Some of the key symptoms are loss of interest in daily activities, loss of energy and sleeping disturbances. The financial consequences of this disease is estimated to be more than 30 million pounds per year in Great Britain and USA alone. There is an increasing interest in the effect exercise has on depression. Smaller studies indicate that exercise is a good treatment for depression. This study will be a large scale randomized trial and will hopefully bring important knowledge on the effects exercise has on depression. We will compare the effect endurance training, weight-lifting exercise and a control group has on depressive symptoms after 4 months training, twice a week.

In this ecological study we examine the impact of stress from repeated terrorist attacks during the second initifada on medical utilization by the Israeli population. We hypothesize that in weeks following serious terror attacks there will be an increase in prescriptions for psychiatric medications and an increased number of unexplained somatic complaints. We will also examine associations with overall medical utlization. We will consider age, gender and effects of geographic poximity to location of attacks.

We investigate whether the add-on specific antitoxoplasmatic medication has positive effects in individuals with schizophrenia or major depression seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii (TG) infection. As TG modulates neurotransmitter metabolism affecting serotonin and dopamine we hypothesize that this chronic persistent infection might play a role for depressive and psychotic symptomatology. Therefore, on the basis of an ex juvantibus approach, specific anti TG medication might further improve psychiatric symptomatology in affected patients. This is investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized treatment trial.

The purpose of this study was to discuss the relation of mastery, social support and depression in patients with depressive disorder. Cross-sectional quantitive study and purposive sampling method were designed. Data collection and analysis was conducted through structural questionnaires (including demographics, social support scale, mastery scale, CESD scale) at a medical center in Taipei. Results showed that patients with depression whose degree of depression was negative correlated with mastery and social support, and mastery was positive correlated with social support. Regression statistics results showed that mastery, social support, age, loss of jobs can predict degree of depression up to 60 percent. The mastery was strongest independent predictable factor to degree of depression, and had partial or total mediate effects to age, loss of jobs, financial condition, and social support. The result of this study suggested that clinically the care of patients with depression should focus on their confidence in mastery and provide strategies to promote their confidence in mastery, which can effectively reduce the degree of depression of those patients.

The overall purpose of this research is to examine whether depression influences immune system function. Studies indicate that individuals who are depressed experience coronary heart disease at a higher rate than expected. This study's goal is to begin identifying mechanisms that might be responsible for this process. This research also examines whether behavioral processes (e.g. smoking) or hormonal processes (e.g. adrenaline release) are responsible for immune system differences between depressed and nondepressed people
