RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to compare the effectiveness of ISIS 5132 with ISIS 3521 in treating women who have metastatic breast cancer that has not responded to previous therapy.

RATIONALE: Chemoprevention therapy is the use of certain drugs to try to prevent the development or recurrence of cancer. The use of tretinoin and/or fenretinide may be an effective way to prevent the recurrence or further development of dysplastic nevus syndrome. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to compare the effectiveness of tretinoin with or without fenretinide in treating patients with dysplastic nevus syndrome.

Methylphenidate in Treating Patients With Melanoma

NCT00003266

RATIONALE: Methylphenidate may relieve some of the side effects of chemotherapy in patients with melanoma. It is not known whether receiving methylphenidate is more effective than receiving no further therapy in treating patients with melanoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine if methylphenidate is more effective than no further therapy for the relief of fatigue and drowsiness in treating patients with melanoma who have received high-dose interferon alfa for 8-24 weeks.
