Photodynamic Therapy in Treating Patients With Stage III or Stage IV Melanoma

RATIONALE: Photodynamic therapy uses light and drugs that make cancer cells more sensitive to light to kill tumor cells. Photodynamic therapy may be effective in treating melanoma. PURPOSE: Phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy in treating patients who have stage III or stage IV melanoma.

NCT00498836

Patients with metastatic malignant melanoma will receive CP-4055 200 mg/m2/day intravenously (IV) on Day 1-5 every four weeks and sorafenib 400 mg b.i.d. (twice daily) every day until complete response or disease worsening/progressing.

RATIONALE: Vaccines may make the body build an immune response that will kill tumor cells. Interleukin-2 may stimulate a person's white blood cells to kill melanoma cells.
