Patients born with heart defects often undergo surgical procedures on a heart lung machine. With improvements in medical and surgical management, their survival has significantly improved, but their brain insult has not been paid much attention. This study is to determine the relationship between specific proteins in the blood and brain injury in patients less than 18-year-old undergoing heart surgery.

This feasibility study will assess whether a 6-month, home-based, parent-led physical activity program, completed after surgical or catheterization treatment, enables young children with congenital heart defects (CHD) to achieve the recommended 180 minutes of daily physical activity. This study includes comprehensive measures of motor skill and physical activity, intervening at a very young age, and targeting the high risk status for sedentary lifestyles of children with CHD. This study will provide essential data on patient recruitment, data collection procedures, the proposed physical activity intervention and resources required to enable the design of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate play-based, parent-delivered interventions optimized to support age-appropriate physical activity and motor skills among young children with CHD.

This study involves testing a new video game designed to support adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) in preparing to manage their health independently. The game aims to teach essential skills such as communicating with healthcare providers, understanding medical information, and managing appointments and medications. This small pilot study will evaluate the game's usability, acceptability, and its impact on participants' confidence and preparedness for managing their heart care. Feedback will be collected from adolescent participants, their parents, and healthcare providers, and the study will examine how the game influences communication during clinical visits.

Due to successes in the last decades in pediatric heart surgery and cardiology, 90-95% of the children with congenital heart disease reach adult age.This results in an increasing number of adults or "grown-ups" with congenital heart disease (ACHD or GUCH patients) that require special health care organization and training programmes. Long term complications of these GUCH patients and optimum treatment strategies are still poorly known. The aim of this registry is to collect quantitative and qualitative data regarding GUCH patients treated in specialised centres in Switzerland.

The goal of this international multicentre prospective observational cohort study with a nested case-control study is to test some automated fetal heart functional parameters in healthy babies compared to those affected by a congenital heart condition. The main questions it aims to answer are: * If there is a significant difference between the two populations of infants * Whether these parameters could significantly improve the predictive value of actual cardiovascular profile score to predict hydrops Participants will be offered two automated cardiac function assessments between 27+6 and 29+6 gestational weeks and between 34+6 and 36+6 weeks of gestation. Functional parameters will be compared between the two study groups and evaluated over time.

Approximately 1 in 10 teenagers lives with a chronic health condition that will require ongoing care as they enter adulthood. Birth defects of the heart, also known as congenital heart disease (CHD) are more common than any other type of birth defect and affect about 1 in 100 children, with most surviving to adulthood. However, most teenagers with CHD have little knowledge about their heart and lack confidence in talking with doctors and nurses about their health. These are essential skills when entering the adult-oriented health care system after graduating from pediatric care. In the current study proposal our team plans to evaluate the effectiveness of delivering 1-on-1 teaching sessions for adolescents who live in smaller communities and can't easily come to Edmonton for appointments in the heart clinic. Fortunately in Alberta we have a widely available system called Telehealth that allows nurses and teens to meet by private, secure teleconferencing while hundreds of miles away. Telehealth is provided by health clinics around the province. We propose to use Telehealth in adolescents' home communities to provide these teaching sessions for 16-19 year olds with CHD who are soon going to be graduating from pediatric to adult care. Participants who receive a nurse-led teaching session will be compared with a similar number of adolescents who are not offered a teaching session, using a questionnaire that addresses skills related to taking care of their health condition. This questionnaire will be completed on-line (or if preferred by the participant, by letter mail) 1 month and 6 month after entering the study. Deciding which adolescents receive a nurse-led teaching session will be random, i.e. like the flip of a coin. Regardless, all participants will receive access to a website for young people with CHD called iHeartChange.

Congenital Heart disease accounts for about one third of the all congenital anomalies. In last decades' huge advancements occurred in treatment and diagnosis. More and more surgeries are being done which causes stress in parents and affects their mental health. Some studies have reported that about one third of the parents of children with CHD remain in stress even after surgery is being done. The goal of this trial is to evaluate effect of educational intervention on mental health of parents of children with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiac surgery compared to the parents who get usual care and pamphlets of the same information. The investigators are including parents of children with CHD who are already diagnosed with CHD and are undergoing cardiac surgery.

The erector spinae plane block is a novel regional anesthetic technique that allows for analgesia of the thorax and abdomen with a peripheral nerve block. The goals of this study are to determine if bilateral erector spinae plane blocks (ESPB) after sternotomy for congenital heart repair in high risk children and adults can decrease outcomes such as duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation (MV), perioperative opioid consumption, days in the intensive care unit (ICU) and length of stay (LOS).

Single ventricular (SV) heart was a uniformly fatal condition before the advances in surgical treatment in 1980. In the present era, 5-year survival rate with SV is 75%, with some centers, including the Stollery Children's Hospital reporting higher survival. Although mortality remains a major concern, the research focus has shifted to management of late complications as well as improving patient physical and mental health related quality of life issues. Children with SV have reduced exercise tolerance and this is progressive through adulthood. Recent advances in remote health assessment and telehealth systems have allowed the development of medically supervised home graduated physical training for adult cardiac patient rehabilitation. To our knowledge, the application of these technologies has not been applied to SV patients. The long term goal is to use this technology to improve patient exercise capacity and to positively influence parental and patient perceptions of the patient's physical ability.

We sought to describe the reinnervation status of adult patients long after the ASO, to identify areas of myocardial perfusion/innervation mismatch and to assess the relation of innervation status and exercise capacity.

Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are detected in 40-60% of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and increase the risk of developmental delay in the presence of syndromes. The aim of the study was to compare cardiopulmonary parameters, gross motor development and hand grip strength in DS children with and without CHD. Demographic variables, cardiopulmonary parameters and echocardiographic values were recorded. Gross motor development was evaluated with Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88). Hand grip strength was measured with the Baseline Pneumatic Bulb Dynamometer.

The purpose of this study is to understand how having a heart problem affects development,quality of life, and family life in young children and their families. Results for children and families with heart disease will be compared to children and families without heart disease. The investigators hope that this information may help us to support children and families better in the future. All children and families that are seen in the HHC Developmental Follow-Up Program will be asked if they would like to take part in this study. It is hypothesized that children with congenital heart disease will demonstrate developmental delays when compared to normative values.

This is a prospective, single center, safety and feasibility trial to evaluate the use of autologous umbilical vein as shunts or conduits in neonatal cardiac surgery. Subjects will be identified here at the Advanced Fetal Care Center (AFCC) following diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) with single ventricle physiology of the fetus via fetal echocardiogram. At time of cesarean section or vaginal delivery, umbilical cord will be harvested in a sterile fashion and the umbilical vein will be dissected free and preserved until first clinically indicated Stage I palliative procedure between day 3 and 7 of life. Subjects will be followed until their Stage II palliative procedure.

The purpose of the proposed study is to evaluate the incidence of subtle increases in intracranial pressure (ICP) following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) using optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), measured by non-invasive ultrasound. As direct measurements of ICP are not feasible following CPB, ONSD will be used as a correlate of ICP. ONSD has been shown to be effective in the ICU and emergency room setting for detecting increased ICP and is an accepted standard for such measurements. The primary hypothesis is that changes in ICP occur following CPB without clinically appreciable signs and symptoms. These changes in ICP will be reflected by changes in ONSD. If there is a significant incidence of sub-clinical cerebral edema and increased ICP postoperatively, these findings may impact postoperative hemodynamic and ventilation goals and techniques.
