PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid in treating patients who have advanced primary or metastatic solid tumors that have not responded to previous therapy.

Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of radiation and chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of radiolabeled monoclonal antibody therapy plus etoposide followed by peripheral stem cell transplantation in treating patients who have advanced myelodysplastic syndrome or refractory leukemia.
