Pre-exposure prophylaxis may be a viable option for African American women at-risk for HIV infection, but few studies have identified optimal strategies to reach African American women in need of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis nor examined effective strategies to scale-up Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis among African American women in the South. African American women in the South experience high rates of intimate partner violence which could force women to choose between HIV prevention or intimate partner violence prevention. The proposed research study seeks to develop, pilot-test, and evaluate a Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Implementation Toolkit within two community healthcare clinics located in Jackson, Mississippi to increase Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis uptake among African American, address intimate partner violence as a barrier to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis uptake, and ultimately combat racial disparities in women's HIV diagnoses.

Veterans and their families are more likely to experience forms of family violence like intimate-partner violence and child maltreatment. Evidence suggests that healthcare and social service providers (HSSPs) need more training to effectively and confidently recognize and respond to these situations. The Violence, Evidence, Guidance, Action (VEGA) Educational Intervention is a novel education intervention aimed at improving provider's preparation for these clinical encounters. The goal of this project is to determine the acceptability and feasibility of a future randomized-controlled trial comparing two approaches (facilitator-led VEGA or self-directed VEGA) to administering the VEGA training to understand whether/how these approaches can support HSSPs continued care of veterans and their families. The investigators aim to generate initial estimates of the effectiveness of both approaches in improving HSSPs knowledge and skills to effectively recognize and respond to intimate-partner violence and related forms of family violence, including child maltreatment. As well, the investigators aim to contribute to the knowledge base regarding optimal educational approaches for HSSP education in family violence. The investigators hypothesize that there will be significant increases in preparedness, knowledge and skills, and self-efficacy to recognize and respond to both CM and IPV in both the experimental and AC arms from Time 1 (baseline) to Time 2 (immediately after the intervention) and Time 1 (baseline) to Time 3 (3 month follow-up). These improvements will be slightly attenuated in the experimental arm. Qualitative data pertaining to perceived value and impact will corroborate the quantitative findings.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual, and other sexually or gender diverse (LGBTIQA+) communities in many countries face high levels of mental health problems compared to the general population. This is often due to discrimination, being excluded, abuse, and unfair treatment. In many low- and middle-income countries, including Nepal, the mental health needs of LGBTIQA+ people are not met, and the violence they experience is often ignored because they are seen as breaking gender norms. The low number of trained mental health specialists in a country like Nepal imply that any short-term effort to alleviate the mental health problems among LGBTIQA+ must rely on other type of support workers such as peers. There is growing evidence that help from community members-such as counselling given by non-professionals-can improve mental well-being. Considering that discrimination of LGBTIQA+ is common also within the health services, this study will look at whether peer counselling-support provided by trained LGBTIQA+ community members-can work well in Nepal. We have improved a counselling program called 'Problem Management Plus' (PM+), developed by the World Health Organization, by adding new parts that focus on reducing the risk of some of the contributing causes of mental distress, namely violence, marginalisation and loneliness. The added components include safety planning, counselling that builds confidence and strength, and goal setting strategies to help study participants use the skills they learn and reach the desired impact. In addition, peer-led monthly group meetings will be conducted to enhance social cohesion, strengthen interpersonal networks, and reduce feeling of loneliness. The study uses a community based participatory research approach, meaning LGBTIQA+ people are invited to give inputs throughout the study from study design to being involved as peer advocates to deliver the counselling. The trial will recruit at least 960 LGBTIQA+ individuals aged 18 to 55 years living in seven districts of Nepal. Study participants will be randomly allocated to one of three arms: one arm receiving individual augmented PM+ counselling with six weekly sessions; one arm receiving the individual augmented PM+ counselling followed by 11 monthly group sessions; and one control arm. There will be a one year follow-up to examine whether the peer support helps improve mental health and reduce exposure to violence among LGBTIQA+ people. The study findings will help guide programmes to improve the mental health of LGBTIQA+ in other low- and middle-income countries where they also experience discrimination, exclusion, and violence.

Prevention of child maltreatment (CM) remains a public health priority in Canada; approximately one-third of Canadians report exposure to at least one form of CM. Physicians play an important role in recognizing and responding to CM and its associated sequelae. However, increasing evidence indicates that physicians receive insufficient training related to recognizing and responding to CM. CM education is especially pertinent during the pediatric and psychiatry residency period but it remains unclear what the optimal approach is for preparing Canadian physicians with the knowledge and skills to effectively recognize and respond to CM. Those educational interventions that have been evaluated in medical education contexts have comparatively little emphasis on the complex overlap between IPV, children's exposure to IPV, and other forms of CM. The purpose of this graduate student research study is to understand the effectiveness of an occupational therapy program in a domestic violence shelter. It is expected that participation will last about 6 weeks. Subjects will complete pretests involving lifestyle assessments and a coping scale and then participate in 8 occupational therapy sessions during the 4 weeks of program implementation. The occupational therapy sessions will last approximately 90 minutes. After the program is completed, subjects will complete the posttests. Procedures and Activities. You will be asked to: Complete a series of questionnaires about your health, well-being, and daily activities. Participate in 8 OT sessions that may include activities such as journaling, positive self-talk, coping skills methods, and grounding exercises. Complete the posttests.

The goal of this pilot randomized clinical trial is to assess feasibility and acceptability of a brief parent-adolescent dating violence prevention intervention (Engaging Together for Healthy Relationships; ETHR) delivered in pediatric primary care settings. The main questions it aims to answer is if ETHR is acceptable and feasible. 4 healthcare providers will receive ETHR to share with their patients which includes clinician training, provider-delivered scripts, resource guides, and a comprehensive website. This will be compared to providers conducting routine well-child care with their patients.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a family counseling intervention, entitled "Tuko Pamoja" (Translation "We are Together" in Kiswahili). The intervention, delivered by lay counselors and through existing community social structures, is expected to improve family functioning and individual mental health among members. The sample includes highly distressed families with a child or adolescent (ages 8-17) exhibiting emotional or behavioral concerns; as such, particular emphasis is placed on adolescent-focused outcomes, including mental health and well-being.

COVID-19 has placed unprecedented strains on parents impacted by toxic stressors (depression, addiction, family violence, and poverty) and reluctant to see mental health-service providers in home/clinic due to fears of infection. Due to the pandemic, PI Letourneau ceased/delayed recruitment in ATTACH™, a CIHR-funded randomized controlled trials (RCT) of in-person (home or clinic) program designed to improve children's mental, emotional and behavioral (MEB) health and development via parent-child relationship intervention. Recognizing the heightened need for already vulnerable families to obtain safe parenting support to manage depressive symptoms/other stressors. The team's primary knowledge user (D. McNeil, Scientific Director, Maternal Newborn Child and Youth Strategic Clinical Network, Alberta Health Services) advocated for online delivery of the ATTACH™ parent training program. In response, an interdisciplinary team from nursing and software engineering rapidly pivoted to an online delivery format. Critical barriers to using existing commercial technologies emerged, making it essential to develop and implement tailored, user-informed virtual care delivery platforms and tools safe, secure, user-friendly for families already stressed. Innovative user interface design and integrated knowledge transfer approaches will be used to: (a) adapt ATTACH™ for virtual delivery; (b) develop virtual platforms (web-based applications) and tools (mobile apps) for flexible delivery of mental health supports for parents and training for professional facilitators; (c) integrate virtual mental health services into the primary care system promoting program uptake; and (d) design/test streamlined and intuitive virtual systems for nimble spread/scaleup. The project catalyzes and enriches the PIs' research program by crossing disciplines (nursing \& engineering) in cutting edge research that is responsive to trends in both mental health intervention and web-interface design. The aim is to adapt, develop, design and pilot test virtual (web-based) intervention program to improve children's mental, emotional and behavioral (MEB) health and development. This will be done by building on successful CIHR funded in-person (home or clinic) programs and pivoting to user-engaged program development, adaptation and pilot testing for virtual delivery in the face of COVID19.

Cash transfers have shown promise in preventing intimate partner violence, and in reducing recipients' stress levels. Cash transfers with behavioral or psychological interventions have shown limited effectiveness at reducing stress in some African countries. Little is known of the cost-effectiveness of interventions delivered alongside cash transfer programs. The MEWE economic evaluation sub-study (MEWE-EE) runs alongside MEWE, a three-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial in Sindh, Pakistan. MEWE-EE will assess the costs and cost-effectiveness of delivering a cash-transfer program (BISP-CT) combined with a life-skills building curriculum (LSB curriculum), compared to the BISP-CT alone. The LSB curriculum is offered to either women who receive BISP-CT, or to women who receive BISP-CT and their husbands.

The enormous global burden of mental illness has been estimated through the publication of the Global Burden of Disease Study, adding momentum to refugee mental health studies (1,2). As research confirms that high levels of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression occur in post-conflict settings, it is essential to develop effective treatment for psychological trauma in refugee populations recovering from mass violence (3-4). PTSD and depression are risk factors for anger, interpersonal discord and violence, not only among those who have trauma and depression, but also among their spouses and children (5-9). This "infectious" model of trauma/violence is critically important in the setting of ethnic conflict, as increased levels of interpersonal violence within the afflicted community hinder its recovery and fuel future cycles of conflict. To date, there has been little research on the interpersonal effects of trauma among refugee populations. The proposed research is a pilot and randomized controlled trial of "Interpersonal Therapy" (IPT) for Sudanese refugees living in Cairo. IPT, a very effective therapy for depression, has been adapted for PTSD treatment and sub-Saharan Africa settings (10-12). Measures will evaluate success of the treatment not only in terms of individual PTSD and depression symptoms, but also with respect to interpersonal conflict. Hypotheses: (1) After IPT intervention, Sudanese refugees will have lower levels of depression and trauma symptoms compared to wait list controls (2) After IPT intervention, Sudanese refugees will have lower levels of interpersonal violence compared to wait list controls.

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a brief yoga- and mindfulness-based psychoeducation program and its working mechanisms in improving psychological health parameters (depression, anxiety, and stress) among women who have experienced domestic violence (DV). In a randomized controlled trial, 51 DV-victimized women were assigned to an intervention group (n = 27) or a waitlist control group (n = 24). The intervention was a five-week yoga- and mindfulness-based psychoeducation program. The researchers planned to provide support for the effectiveness of a brief yoga- and mindfulness-based psychoeducation program for improving the psychological health of DV-victimized women. Self-compassion and rumination were hypothesized as working mechanisms underlying the intervention's success.

Research suggests that children and young people (CYP) who witness domestic violence are susceptible to develop Post-traumatic stress (PTS). As their traumatic experiences are often repeated and prolonged, these CYP are likely to present with 'complex trauma' presentations, which also include other difficulties such as depressive symptoms and problems in functioning. This study aims to investigate whether Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) delivered via videoconferencing can be effective, feasible, and acceptable for CYP who witnessed domestic violence. NET is a brief, evidence-based intervention for complex trauma which has been adapted for CYP. The study will use a 'single case study series' design and look at whether NET can impact on PTS, psychological distress, and functioning. It will also look at the processes of change within NET and participants' experience of the therapy. Young people aged 12-17 who are experiencing PTS after exposure to domestic violence will be recruited from the waiting lists of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Up to six participants will receive six to ten weekly video sessions and the changes in the outcomes will be explored before, during and after NET. Finally, participants will be interviewed about their experiences. The study is part of a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme and funded by Health Education England. Potential benefits include investigating NET with a new group, contributing to the research on complex trauma interventions for CYP, and providing insights on the effectiveness and acceptability of therapies via video.

This study is a randomized controlled counseling intervention with pre-test, post-test and control groups. After obtaining informed consent from 80 women affected by domestic violence that referred to the health centers of the villages covered by Al-Kooh Mashhad Health Center (Mashhad Al-Kooh Health Center, Michan, Mosleh Abad) and Mashhad Al-Kobeh Health Center, and are eligible to enter Rct are. A woman who has been subjected to domestic violence is someone who has obtained at least one score on the (cts2) questionnaire . Then, these people are randomly divided into two groups of intervention (n = 40) and control (n = 40). The members of the intervention group in groups of 10 are treated in 8 sessions of 90 minutes once a week based on "acceptance and commitment treatment" based on Hayes (2006) approach by a trained consultant (researcher) in Mashhad AL-koubeh Health Center. The control group also receives 8 counseling sessions once a week by the same "health education" consultant in groups of 10 at the same center. One week after the end of the eighth session and one month later, the questionnaires are completed again by trained questioners for both groups. The instruments studied in this study include demographic questionnaire, conflict resolution tactics questionnaire (cts 2) and resilience questionnaire (Connor-Davidson). Data analysis is performed using descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS software version 23.

There is some evidence that suggests that economic empowerment and challenging gender inequalities and prevailing ideas on masculinities will lead to a decrease in levels of partner violence. However, there is still a gap in our understanding of what elements are required. This project evaluates whether participation within a savings group and a discussion group confronting gender norms will lead to an increase in women's individual agency and decision-making ability that will improve their economic independence and decrease intimate partner violence in their homes.

The study examines the effectiveness of parent-child Group Attachment Based Intervention (GABI) in reducing risk of maltreatment in infants and toddlers compared with parenting skills classes. GABI directly addresses the needs of isolated, marginalized families, with the goals of of enhancing parent coping and resilience, and improving parent-child attachment relationships. We hypothesize that compared to usual care, GABI will be associated with improved child, parent and parent-child outcomes.
