NCT00003811
RATIONALE: Chemotherapy drugs use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Chemoprotective drugs such as amifostine may protect normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of high-dose cisplatin, etoposide, and bleomycin plus amifostine in treating children who have malignant germ cell tumors.
NCT00007501
The incidence and severity of HZ (or shingles), as well as the frequency and severity of its complications, increases markedly with increasing age. More than half of all cases occur in persons over the age of 60. Even without complications, HZ can interfere with an elderly patient's ability to perform essential activities of daily living, resulting in a loss of independence that is emotionally devastating and frequently irreversible. The most common complication of HZ in elderly persons is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which frequently results in disordered sleep, chronic fatigue, anxiety and severe depression. Antiviral therapy has a modest impact on the acute phase of HZ. However, it does not appear to prevent the development of PHN. This study is a 5.5 year randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, efficacy trial to determine whether vaccination with live-attenuated Oka/Merck varicella-zoster decreases the incidence and/or severity of herpes zoster (HZ) and its complications in adults 60 years of age and older.
NCT00003025
RATIONALE: Vaccines made from a person's cancer cells may make the body build an immune response to and kill tumor cells. Combining vaccine therapy with surgery may be an effective treatment for pancreatic cancer. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of vaccine therapy in treating patients with stage I or stage II pancreatic cancer that has been surgically removed.
NCT00003022
RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody therapy in treating patients who have leptomeningeal metastases.
NCT00002919
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy following surgery in treating patients with stage II bladder cancer.
NCT00247637
This is a study of the genetic basis of brain dysfunction in people with schizophrenia.
NCT00002800
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of high-dose cytarabine plus idarubicin in treating patients with newly diagnosed acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome.
NCT00072436
This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of gemcitabine hydrochloride and alvocidib in treating patients with solid tumors. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine hydrochloride and alvocidib, use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells
NCT01097018
The trial will compare the overall survival of perifosine plus capecitabine to placebo plus capecitabine in patients with refractory advanced colorectal cancer.
NCT00267644
Objective: Although approximately 9% of patients presenting to a Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) are dehydrated, there is no reliable method to measure objectively the degree of intravascular dehydration. Respiratory changes in Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) diameter have been shown to predict volume status in adults. Previous research has demonstrated correlation between IVC diameter and volume status in children undergoing hemodialysis. Other studies have shown that IVC diameter in children can be sonographically measured rapidly and accurately by ED physicians. If we can establish that IVC diameter predicts volume status in dehydrated children, this tool could assist the ED physician in rapid diagnosis and prompt resuscitation without the need to wait for blood or urine tests. In this study we use the "dehydrated patient" as a model for hypovolemia, with the idea that the data could ultimately be used in the setting of any hypovolemic state. We aim to evaluate whether ultrasound of the pediatric IVC can be used to reliably assess volume status. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study. Pediatric ED patients ranging in age from 1 to 41 months were assessed by a Pediatric emergency physician and stratified as either clinically euvolemic or hypovolemic. After consent was obtained, one of three Emergency Medicine Residents performed trans-abdominal sonographic measurements of the IVC diameter. Measurements of the IVC diameter just caudal to the insertion of the hepatic veins were obtained in a longitudinal orientation.
NCT00767338
The primary research hypothesis is that microsurgical varicocelectomy will result in an increase in live birth in infertile couples where the male partner has a palpable varicocele and an abnormal semen analysis in comparison to male partners who do not have microsurgical varicocelectomy. The secondary hypotheses include: 1. To assess whether up to 4 cycles of intrauterine insemination confers any additional increase in live birth rates compared to timed intercourse; 2. To examine spousal pregnancy rate as the secondary outcome; and 3. To study the effect of varicocelectomy in men with infertility, an abnormal semen analysis, and a palpable varicocele on * Testicular semen analysis parameters; * Serological measures of FSH, LH, total and free testosterone and * Measures of quality of life and sexual function in both partners.
NCT00762164

Local infusion of abciximab following thrombus aspiration 2. Local infusion of abciximab and no thrombus aspiration 3. No local infusion and thrombus aspiration 4. No local infusion and no thrombus aspiration In addition, a cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sub-study evaluating microvascular obstruction (MVO) will be performed with up to 160 subjects at up to 20 sites.
NCT01282333
This phase I clinical trial is studying the side effects and best dose of veliparib and gemcitabine hydrochloride when given with cisplatin in treating patients with advanced biliary, pancreatic, urothelial, or non-small cell lung cancer. Veliparib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as cisplatin and gemcitabine hydrochloride, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Veliparib may help cisplatin and gemcitabine hydrochloride work better by making tumor cells more sensitive to the drugs.
