NCT01707433
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Quantitative urine screening for mucopolysaccharides (MPS) has been the primary method for detecting mucopolysaccharidoses in children. This method may not be sufficiently sensitive and may miss some patients with arylsulfatase B (ARSB) deficiency. Investigators propose to identify patients retrospectively and prospectively who carry a diagnosis of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, bilateral proximal femoral epiphyseal dysplasia, or bilateral Legg-Calve-Perthes. For these patients, investigators will perform enzyme testing on a blood sample which will identify MPS VI or IVA. Patients who have an earlier diagnosis of MPS are likely to have better health outcomes with medical management. Therefore, it is important to determine effective diagnostic methods. Investigators believe that bilateral hip involvement should alert the clinician to the possibility of MPS VI and further examination. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the correct diagnoses of two MPS storage disorders are delayed in patients with bilateral proximal femoral epiphyseal dysplasia and normal quantitative urine MPS studies.
NCT02112071
The general objective is to investigate the effect of a 12 week walking exercise program on vascular endothelial function, arterial stiffness/compliance, and vascular health biomarkers in men and women with pre-dialysis type 2 diabetic kidney disease (DKD).
NCT02524132
In this research project, the investigators addressed if incorporating physical movements with preschoolers will help increase their ability to retain concepts learned in preschool such as letter, sound and number recognition. Movement plays an important role in the brain. Exercise shows many benefits for the brain to help maintain clearer thought, improve memory, and increase activity in the brain, especially the areas involved in memory, attention, and language. The following research includes an eight week study of the implementation of movement breaks with one preschool class, while using another class as a control group. During the two weeks of baseline data, data was collected from every student in both groups on their letter recognition with both upper and lower case, letter sound identification, and number recognition for numbers 0-10. The group that implemented movement breaks had three-five minute scheduled times to stop for movement. Data was collected and compared between the two groups to find differences in their academic performance.
NCT00071565
The purposes of this study are to identify possible genes that may increase the risk of aneurysm development in the brain, and to determine the effect of environmental factors such as cigarette smoking and high blood pressure on the expression of these genes.
NCT02056574
This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-dose study investigating the safety and efficacy of NA-1 in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) undergoing endovascular repair of ruptured intracranial aneurysms. Up to 300 male and female patients with SAH undergoing endovascular repair of a ruptured intracranial aneurysm will be dosed with 2.60 mg/kg of NA-1 or placebo as a 10 minute intravenous infusion after completion of the endovascular procedure on Day 1 of the study period. Subjects will undergo interim procedures at Day 2-4, Day 30-45, and end-of-study procedures on Day 90.
NCT00044291
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the first line combination hormonal therapy of an experimental drug, atamestane, plus an FDA-approved drug, toremifene (Fareston®), is more effective than another approved drug, letrozole (Femara®), in delaying the growth of breast cancer in postmenopausal patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, and whether the side effects of the combination are different from the side effects of letrozole.
NCT01169571
The objective of this study is to characterize the hemodynamic effects of Precedex (dexmedetomidine (DEX)) during 3 loading-dose paradigms in mechanically ventilated post-surgical subjects in an intensive care setting.
NCT01232569
This randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, multicenter study will evaluate the reduction in disease activity and the safety of tocilizumab (RoActemra/Actemra) in combination with traditional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in patients with active, moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. In the double-blind part of the study, patients will be randomized to receive either 162 mg tocilizumab or placebo subcutaneously every 2 weeks for 24 weeks using a pre-filled syringe. In the open-label part of the study, patients will be randomized to receive 162 mg tocilizumab subcutaneously every 2 weeks from Week 24 to Week 96 using a pre-filled syringe or an auto-injector.
NCT02075450
Our project aims to improve the delivery and assessment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during pediatric cardiac arrest by introducing 2 novel approaches: 1. We will evaluate the effectiveness of a novel, credit card sized, and highly affordable "nano-card" CPR visual feedback device to improve compliance with HSFC CPR guidelines when used during simulated pediatric cardiac arrest; 2. We will also develop and study a novel, "Just-in-Time" (JIT) CPR training video, integrating proven educational methods (video-based lecture, expert modeling, practice-while-watching), and use the CPR visual feedback device to provide real-time coaching. We hypothesize that: H1: The use of a CPR visual feedback device will improve compliance with current HSFC CPR and resuscitation guidelines during a simulated pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest scenario compared with standard CPR with no visual feedback. H2: A JIT CPR Training Video, viewed by healthcare providers 2-4 weeks prior to the resuscitation event, will improve compliance with current HSFC CPR and resuscitation guidelines during simulated pediatric cardiac arrest compared with those healthcare providers with no prior exposure to the JIT CPR Training Video. H3: That there is poor correlation between providers' perception of CPR quality and actual measured CPR quality H4: That task load varies depending on provider role and type of clinical scenario
NCT00047216
RATIONALE: Tipifarnib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for tumor cell growth. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of tipifarnib in treating patients who have recurrent bladder cancer.
NCT01506401
What is the effect of early high frequency oscillation (HFO) versus a lung-protective conventional ventilation (CV) strategy (using HFO only as rescue therapy), on all-cause hospital mortality among patients with severe early acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)?
NCT00003636
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining surgery with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy before surgery is more effective than chemotherapy after surgery in treating ovarian, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying chemotherapy given before surgery to see how well it works compared to chemotherapy given after surgery with or without additional surgery in treating patients with stage III or stage IV ovarian cancer, peritoneal cancer, or fallopian tube cancer.
