This is a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, 48-week, comparative study. Approximately 150 HIV-infected, treatment-naïve patients with CCR5-tropic virus will be stratified by HIV-1 RNA: ≥100,000 copies/mL versus \<100,000 copies/mL and will be randomized 2:2:1 to receive: * Arm A: CVC 100 mg (2 tablets, 50 mg each) QD + CVC matching placebo (2 tablets) QD + EFV matching placebo (1 tablet) QHS + FTC/TDF (1 tablet) QD. * Arm B: CVC 200 mg (4 tablets, 50 mg each) QD + EFV matching placebo (1 tablet) QHS + FTC/TDF (1 tablet) QD. * Arm C: CVC matching placebo (4 tablets) QD + EFV 600 mg (1 tablet) QHS + FTC/TDF (1 tablet) QD. Doses of both CVC/placebo and EFV/ placebo will be administered as double-blinded study drug. FTC/TDF will be administered as open-label study drug in a fixed-dose combination formulation (Truvada). CVC/placebo should be taken following breakfast; EFV should be taken on an empty stomach at bedtime. HIV-1 RNA levels and CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts, percentages, and ratios will be measured at every visit. Samples for viral tropism and resistance testing in case of virologic failure will be collected at Screening and each on-treatment visit. Biomarkers associated with inflammation and immune activation will be measured at Baseline (predose) and each study visit thereafter, with flow cytometry obtained at weeks 4, 12, 24, 48, and 52. Fasting metabolic indicators of glucose control (glucose and insulin for HOMA-IR, HbA1c) and fasting lipid profiles (HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides) will be measured at Baseline (predose) and Weeks 4, 12, 24, 48, and 52. Waist-to-hip ratios will be measured at Baseline and Weeks 24 and 48. Plasma samples will be collected and stored for possible future studies at Baseline (predose) and every visit thereafter.
NCT00003486
RATIONALE: Antineoplastons are naturally occurring substances that may also be made in the laboratory. Antineoplastons may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well antineoplaston therapy works in treating patients with colon cancer.
NCT00003078
RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining radiation therapy and chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not known whether receiving radiation therapy plus cisplatin is more effective than receiving radiation therapy plus fluorouracil in treating patients with cancer of the cervix. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of radiation therapy plus cisplatin or fluorouracil in treating patients with primary stage IIB, stage IIIB, or stage IVA cancer of the cervix.
NCT00002993
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy with mitomycin, doxorubicin, and cisplatin in treating patients with recurrent or advanced cancer of the uterus.
NCT00003691
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy consisting of doxorubicin and cisplatin with or without paclitaxel and G-CSF in treating patients who have stage III, stage IV, or recurrent endometrial cancer.
NCT00002568
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug or combining chemotherapy with surgery may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy consisting of paclitaxel and cisplatin with or without surgery in treating patients with stage III ovarian epithelial cancer.
NCT00003811
RATIONALE: Chemotherapy drugs use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Chemoprotective drugs such as amifostine may protect normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of high-dose cisplatin, etoposide, and bleomycin plus amifostine in treating children who have malignant germ cell tumors.
NCT00007501
The incidence and severity of HZ (or shingles), as well as the frequency and severity of its complications, increases markedly with increasing age. More than half of all cases occur in persons over the age of 60. Even without complications, HZ can interfere with an elderly patient's ability to perform essential activities of daily living, resulting in a loss of independence that is emotionally devastating and frequently irreversible. The most common complication of HZ in elderly persons is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which frequently results in disordered sleep, chronic fatigue, anxiety and severe depression. Antiviral therapy has a modest impact on the acute phase of HZ. However, it does not appear to prevent the development of PHN. This study is a 5.5 year randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, efficacy trial to determine whether vaccination with live-attenuated Oka/Merck varicella-zoster decreases the incidence and/or severity of herpes zoster (HZ) and its complications in adults 60 years of age and older.
NCT00651755
The goal of this clinical research study is to learn the effect of combining aprepitant with CHOP or R-CHOP in patients with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) that is either newly diagnosed or has come back. Researchers also want to see if aprepitant can help to prevent nausea and/or vomiting that may be caused by chemotherapy treatment with CHOP or R-CHOP, in these patients. CHOP consists of four drugs - Cyclophosphamide (also called Cytoxan/Neosar), Doxorubicin (or Adriamycin), Vincristine (Oncovin) and Prednisolone while R-CHOP includes Rituximab and CHOP.
NCT01208129
The objectives of this study are to assess the safety of NAB001 for topical treatment of mild to moderate distal onychomycosis of the toenails over 52 weeks and to compare the efficacy of NAB001 to vehicle alone at the end of the study (Week 56) after treating for 52 weeks.
NCT00085345
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as melphalan, arsenic trioxide, and ascorbic acid, work in different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Arsenic trioxide and ascorbic acid may also help melphalan kill more cancer cells by making them more sensitive to the drugs. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving melphalan together with arsenic trioxide and ascorbic acid works in treating patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.
NCT00054392
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy such as gemcitabine, carboplatin, and paclitaxel use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which chemotherapy regimen is more effective in treating non-small cell lung cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of different combination chemotherapy regimens in treating patients who have stage IIIB, stage IV, or recurrent non-small cell lung cancer.
NCT01451125
