NCT00287599
The military is subject to traumatic wounds of various types and severity. Such wounds are predisposed to infection because they 1) tend to be extensive and deep, 2) may affect areas of normal carriage of potentially pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, upper respiratory tract, and the female genital tract, 3) typically produce tissue damage, 4) may introduce foreign bodies, 5) may interfere with local blood supply, 6) tend to produce ischemia, edema and hemorrhage, 7) may be complicated by fractures or burns and 8) may lead to shock and overwhelming of the body's systemic defenses. It will not always be possible in the military setting to cleanse and debride the wound promptly and effectively or to promptly provide surgery in the event of damage to vital structures. In the active military setting, the probability of wound infection following trauma is relatively high. In the absence of rapid identification of infecting flora and provision of information on antimicrobial susceptibility, clinicians must resort to empiric therapy rather than a tailored therapy. There is a tendency to use one of the top available agents that would likely be active against the vast majority of bacteria. This leads to increases in antimicrobial resistance, an important problem. The investigators hypothesize that the use of molecular biology techniques will provide identification of the microorganisms responsible for wound infection more rapidly and accurately. The investigators will evaluate real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technique under this proposal. This procedure can be applied directly to material from the wound without need for first growing the organisms. It can be used to define the total flora of the wound within five hours. The investigators will first develop primers and probes that will detect the various bacteria anticipated in a given wound in a certain location. These primers and probes will be used in real-time PCR for rapid and accurate identification of the wound flora. The information obtained with real-time PCR is quantitative so that one may judge the relative importance of different isolates. The investigators will also use another molecular approach, 16S rRNA gene cloning, and conventional cultures; these will provide further information about the flora of various wounds. Definitive identification of anaerobes can be provided quickly and that, along with information on usual antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, can be life-saving or shorten the course of the infection considerably.

NCT01075906
Colchicine is widely recognized as safe and effective treatment of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) in children and adults. Colchicine is currently used to treat FMF in younger patients by inexact dosing through breaking or crushing adult-dose tablets. An age-appropriate sprinkle formulation will allow for more accurate dosing in pediatric patients. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the steady-state pharmacokinetics of multiple oral doses of colchicine sprinkle capsules administered to pediatric and adult FMF patients. Secondary objectives include evaluation of the safety and tolerability of this regimen in pediatric and adult FMF patients and measurement of the levels of acute phase reactants (i.e, serum amyloid A \[SAA\], erythrocyte sedimentation rate \[ESR\], C-reactive protein \[CRP\]) at baseline and after dosing.
NCT00650468

NCT00574743
This study will evaluate the safety and efficacy of EC-MPS (ERL080) in comparison to MMF in de novo heart recipients.
NCT01147679
This study is designed to document the loss of sociomoral emotions (like empathy, guilt, and embarrassment) in patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. The loss of these emotions, which function as the motivators for social behavior, will manifest in specific interpersonal behaviors. These behaviors will correlate with regional changes in regional changes in medial frontal and anterior temporal lobes. These social and emotional changes will be compared with a young-onset Alzheimer's disease comparison group.
NCT01279031
The purpose of this study is to look at the outcomes of your vision after your cataract surgery based on two different types of equipment that will be used during your surgery.
NCT01487148
This study is designed to compare the performance of the P-1000 System, POCARED's Rapid Diagnostic System which uses optical fluorescence analysis, to standard methods of uropathogen quantification and identification.
NCT00561366
Arimoclomol is a small molecule that upregulates "molecular chaperones" in cells under stress. Arimoclomol extends survival by five weeks when given both pre-symptomatically and at disease onset in a mutant superoxide dismutase (SOD1) transgenic mouse model of ALS. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated to have neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects in other rat models of nerve damage. Molecular chaperone proteins are critical in the cellular response to stress and protein misfolding. Recent data suggest that the SOD1 mutation responsible for ALS in some patients with familial disease reduces the availability of a variety of molecular chaperones, and thus weakens their ability to respond to cellular stress. Protein misfolding and consequent aggregation may play a role in the pathogenesis of both the familial and sporadic forms of ALS. Therapeutic agents such as arimoclomol that improve cellular chaperone response to protein misfolding may be helpful in ALS.
NCT01215799
