RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Umbilical cord blood transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by the chemotherapy or radiation therapy that was used to kill cancer cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of umbilical cord blood transplantation plus combination chemotherapy in treating patients who have hematologic cancer or nonmalignant hematologic disease.

Eligible patients will be randomized in a ratio of 2:1 to receive either chemotherapy (a taxane and a platinum compound) plus CPG 7909 Injection or chemotherapy alone. Protocol therapy will be administered until disease progression or intolerable toxicity. CpG 7909 Injection will be administered subcutaneously, on Weeks 2 and 3 of each three-week cycle (days 8 and 15) and chemotherapy will be administered on Week 1 (Day 1). Patients will undergo complete disease evaluation at the end of every other treatment cycle until disease progression.

To evaluate whether the addition of amifostine will allow for the safe administration of idarubicin at a dose of 21 mg/m² in combination with standard-dose ara-C in older patients with newly diagnosed, previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia (AML); and 2. To estimate the complete remission rate of induction therapy with amifostine, idarubicin (21 mg/m²), plus ara-C or induction therapy with idarubicin (12 mg/m²) plus ara-C in this patient population.

RATIONALE: Bone marrow transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy used to kill cancer cells. Sometimes the transplanted cells from a donor can make an immune response against the body's normal cells. Eliminating the T cells from the donor cells before transplanting them may prevent this from happening. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II/III trial to compare the effectiveness of conventional bone marrow transplantation with T cell-depleted bone marrow transplantation in treating patients who have leukemia, myelodysplasia, or lymphoblastic lymphoma.

The purpose of this study is to determine the highest dose of CT53518 that can safely be given to patients with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) and to identify the side effects associated with taking the drug. The study will evaluate how CT53518 is absorbed, broken down, and eliminated by the body. Additionally, the study will evaluate the effects of the drug on a specific type of cell in bone marrow and blood, known as a blast.
