Many critically ill newborns in the neonatal intensive care (NICU) or critical care unit (NCCU) environment develop feeding and movement problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which neurophysiologically based occupational therapy intervention (NBOTI) for NCCU infants would affect the intervention group's oral feeding and other covariates, such as heart rate variability (HRV) during feeding. The biopsychosocial model provided the study's conceptual framework. The key research question explored whether NBOTI in the NCCU promoted healthy infant development through feeding, movement organization, and parent self-efficacy. This exploratory study with 10 NCCU infants and 10 historical matched controls utilized a mixed method design of qualitatively coded video analysis and inferential statistics such as the t test, the binomial test, hierarchal linear modeling (HLM), and multivariate analysis. Significant differences were obtained between the intervention and comparison groups in the number of days from all tube to all oral feeding before discharge and speed at which the infants gained weight. Longitudinal analyses of the intervention group data were employed to reveal significant trends and pre/post differences in the HRV data along with how quickly the infants ate, parent perceptions of self efficacy and decreased stress in the NCCU. Finally, qualitative findings obtained from videotape analysis provide further evidence that NBOTI was effective in facilitating feeding and promoting development. The recommendations are to replicate this study to validate and expand the findings of the current study. The model for infant care suggested by the findings could contribute to positive social change by fostering positive physical and emotional child development and healthy child-parent and family-caregiver relationships.

Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive disorder in the brain which makes the control and execution of movements difficult. One of the possible ways to analyze motor control in these individuals could be through analysis of movement speed and accuracy. Objective: To verify the speed-accuracy trade-off in individuals with CP. Method: 96 individuals were evaluated, 48 with CP and 48 with typical development (TD), matched by age and sex. The software used was the "Fitts' Reciprocal Aiming Task v.1.0 (Horizontal)", performed on a computer using an external optical mouse, with progressive indices of difficulty (IDs): ID2, ID4a and ID4b. Each index of difficulty was performed three times and the total time/touches captured.

The purpose of this randomized and controlled intervention study is to explore the effect of a physiotherapy intervention targeting contract and spastic hamstring muscles in children having bilateral spastic cerebral palsy (CP), GMFCS I-III: A stretching routine targeting hamstrings (and psoas if short), and a progressive strengthening program on the muscles extending then lower extremities (quadriceps, gluteus maximus and triceps surae) Study hypothesis: Stretching of hamstrings and strength training of the extending muscles in the lower extremities in children with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy will increase popliteal angle, active knee extension, and gait function.

Long hours of daily sitting and lack of Physical Activity (PA) are risk factors for morbidity and mortality. People with movement disabilities, including adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) tend to lead a sedentary life styl and have have poor physical fitness. Adolescents with CP where found to be inactive most of the day thus, they are in greater risk of disease than the general population. In addition, over the years, people with disabilities experience physical and functional deterioration. Reducing sedentary behavior and increasing daily activity can reduce health risk factors among the adolescents with CP, reduce secondary impairments and preserve function. Interventions that included exercise alone has not resulted in physical activity and participating in a structured training did not continue after cessation intervention. The objectives of this study are to establish effective programs aiming to promote an active life style among adolescents and young adults with CP and to evaluate there outcomes. Specific objectives- Stage 1- Identifying barriers and facilitators for reducing sedentary behaviors and increasing physical activity among adolescents and young adults with CP. As well as, identifying mediators, needs and preferences for reducing sedentary behaviors and increasing physical activity among adolescents and young adults with CP. Stage 2- Based on stage 1- Establishing an intervention for reducing sedentary behaviors and increasing physical activity among adolescents. Stage 3- translating and developing questioners for the study. * Translating the ASK-Performance and the ASK-Capability questionnaires to Hebrew and validating the Hebrew translation. * Developing a self-efficacy perception questioner for increasing physical activity and reducing and sedentary behavior. * Translating to Hebrew, adjusting and validating an activity diary. Stage 4- evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed intervention program on reducing sedentary behaviors and increasing physical activity among adolescents and young adults with CP.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neuromuscular disease that results in rapid decline in normal muscle function and tone leading to difficulties with mobility, eating, drinking, breathing, sleeping, and communicating. The disease is progressive and no cure currently exists. Most people diagnosed with ALS succumb within 3 to 5 years. The only approved treatment to slow the progression of ALS is called Rilutek® (riluzole) which has only a modest effect and has been shown to increase survival by a few months. Muscular dysfunction present in people with ALS is caused by nerve breakdown and a dysfunction in the communication between the muscles and the nerves. The area where these communications occur is called the neuromuscular junction. Some recent studies have focused on using different medications to enhance communication at the neuromuscular junction with the goal of improving muscle function as a result. This approach is unproven but may help to slow the progression of the disease. Pimozide is a medication that has been demonstrated to enhance communication at the neuromuscular junction in fish and mice. This study will look at whether Pimozide may help to slow the progression of ALS and how much medication needs to be taken to have an effect.

The primary objective of the trial is to investigate the survival time (the time from randomization until death or end of the trial) compared between control group and experimental group. This is a prospective, multicenter, randomized, stratified, parallel-group, double-blind trial comparing placebo with 1 mg/d rasagiline as add-on therapy to 100 mg riluzole in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 250 enrolled patients. For entry, the El Escorial Criteria for the diagnosis of ALS will be used. The patients have to be stable on riluzole at least 4 weeks prior to randomization.

The diaphragmatic pacemaker (DP) has proven its utility in replacing mechanical ventilation (MV) in patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), by improving the patients quality of life and reducing morbi-mortality and the associated health care costs. The anesthetic management of these patients and the particularities of the surgical procedure represent an anesthetic challenge. The objective of our study is to analyze the management and the intraoperative complications in the patients with DP in our institution.

This trial is conducted in the United States of America (USA). The aim of this trial is to examine whether nurses prefer to use the NovoFine® Autocover Needle or the BD Safety Glide (TM) Syringe (only) in a hospital setting. The number of needle stick injuries will also be evaluated and whether these hospital nurses prefer the safety features of the NovoFine® Autocover Needle versus those of the BD Safety Glide (TM) Syringe. The identified hospital nurses will evaluate the two types of needles during standard administration of insulin to patients being treated for diabetes.

The purpose of this study is to assess the use of a commercially available arm weight supporting training system (Armeo®Spring) in conjunction with Constraint Induced Therapy (CIT) for improving upper extremity function for children with unilateral cerebral palsy. In addition, the study aims to assess the potential cortical changes with Armeo®Spring therapy and CIT with the use of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) motor mapping. This within-subjects repeated-measures study will be conducted at St. Mary's Hospital for Children. Subjects will be recruited from the general population. A sample size of 10 participants is required for the study. Minority and gender distributions of this study are expected to reflect the distributions in the general population of this region. Therapy: Participating children will have their unaffected arm placed in a sling. The sling is placed at the start of the day and the child is encouraged to have this on during all therapy sessions.The affected arm will be used for repetitive therapeutic activities.Therapy sessions will include activities aimed at building motor learning skills. TMS will be used to map the brain. Participants will have MRI of the brain that is T1 weighted with 0.9 -1.1 voxel. size to allow for on-screen navigation of the cerebral cortex while performing TMS.The stimulating coil will be held to the scalp over each M1 hemisphere and an induced electrical current passed through the coil will create a magnetic pulse that stimulates the brain Children will be assessed using functional hand tests and TMS.

The purpose of this research study is to learn more about the usefulness of a physical therapy treatment that combines robot-assisted walking with electrical impulses that help to make muscles contract. This treatment is intended for children with cerebral palsy. Up to eleven children with cerebral palsy will receive up to 18 treatments and will have several evaluations before and after treatment.

A recent publication (Boulay et al. 2012) highlighted the role of the peroneus longus (PL) muscle in equinus foot deformity in children with hemiplegia. BoNT (Dysport) injections into this muscle have not yet been described in the literature. Based on the results of a previous study, the hypothesis is: this muscle may thus constitute a new therapeutic target for botulinum toxin injections in the early management of spastic equinus in children aged 2 years or older, before the onset of fixed neuro-orthopedic deformity and the midfoot break. The aim of this retrospective study is to describe in intramuscular BoNT (Dysport) injections into PL based on the results obtained in a cohort of children (approximately 30 subjects) with cerebral palsy (hemiplegia or diplegia) and which have been treated in the service since 2007 until July 2012. The investigators results are based on clinical, radiological and video evaluations. For this study, data will be collected in medical folder of each children belonging to this cohort. All children (approximately 30 subjects) with cerebral palsy (hemiplegia or diplegia) which have been treated by BoNT (Dysport) intramuscular injections into PL in the service between 2007 and July 2012 will be screened. Subjects will be selected according to the following defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data will be collected retrospectively (using a specific case report form designed for the study) in medical folder of each included subject for all visit of follow-up after BoNT (Dysport) injection into PL (since the first BoNT (Dysport) injection up to 2012). Then, data will be entered in a database. After that, they will be analysed .
