The goal of this pilot trial is to test a protocol for a planned Canada-wide clinical trial looking at whether or not the use of a patients own blood works as good as the current standard of care using donated blood products to reduce blood loss in adult patients having heart surgery. The main questions this study aims to answer are: * Is the protocol practical, effective, and efficient. * Does the use of a patients own blood lower the following: bleeding, the amount donated blood products given, and complications. Participants will be separated into two groups by a process that is like flipping a coin. One group will donate blood to themselves in the operating room and get their own blood back after surgery. The other group will be given blood products donated by other humans to treat the bleeding after heart surgery. Researchers will compare both groups to see if patients that get their own blood have fewer donated blood products given at time of heart surgery and have less complications after surgery.

In spine surgery, it is important to try to minimize bleeding. In particular, spine surgery often involves inserting hardware into bone, and/or removing bone in the spine. Because the bone in the spine contains blood vessels, there can often be bleeding from the bone itself that is difficult to stop completely. One way to stop bone bleeding is through the use of wax-like materials, which plug the bleeding bone and act as a physical barrier to stop bleeding. One example is Ostene bone hemostasis material, which has the advantage of being "water soluble", meaning it will dissolve naturally over time. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how well Ostene does at decreasing bleeding, by using a recognized scale called the validated intraoperative bleeding severity scale, abbreviated as "VIBe". In this study, the investigators will record the bleeding severity throughout multiple time points in surgery using this scale, and then the investigators will compare the measurements to patients in the past who did not receive Ostene. Overall, this research will help measure how well Ostene decreases bleeding.

This study has been designed to evaluate how effective the Bizact tonsillectomy device is in reducing operating time and complications that occur after surgery. This device operates in a different way than the standard device that is used for most tonsillectomies. In 2019, a study was conducted in 186 children and adults using this device in tonsillectomies. Results showed lower blood loss and shortened time in surgery. However, the rate for bleeding as a complication after surgery was the same as other procedures that are used in tonsillectomy

Postoperative bleeding is still an important concern after major abdominal surgery. Postoperative bleeding is the most important determinant of morbidity and death. It results in longer hospital stays, the necessity for extra radiological tests, interventional radiology treatments, and the possibility of reoperation. Early detection of postoperative bleeding reduces morbidity and mortality with appropriate intervention.Simultaneous arterial and venous blood gas measurements can be used to quickly identify the degree of bleeding and the need for replacement in serious trauma patients brought to the emergency room.Lactate levels, venous oxygen saturation, and the differential in partial pressure of carbon dioxide between arterial and venous blood can all be used to indicate the requirement for replacement, as demonstrated in several studies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate lactate levels, venous oxygen saturation, and arterial-venous partial pressure of carbon dioxide difference in blood gas analysis in order to assess the severity of bleeding in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery as early as possible and perform replacement as soon as possible.

The goal of this clinical trial is to compare different strategies for normothermia prevention in patients undergoing body contouring and other Aesthetic Plastic Surgery procedures. The main question(s) it aims to answer are: * Do active measures have an impact on preventing hypothermia in patients undergoing cosmetic procedures? * Does an active normothermia prevention protocol have any impact in the clinical setting? Four different protocols will be used for patient peroperative preparation for normothermia.

Fibroids are the most commonly encountered tumors in the female reproductive system. In patients, fibroids most often lead to abnormal uterine bleeding and the resulting anemia. In some cases, they can cause infertility or habitual abortions. Another complaint caused by fibroids is pain due to pressure and effects on adjacent organs. Very large fibroids can lead to abdominal swelling. Therefore, if a patient becomes symptomatic due to fibroids, myomectomy or, if necessary, hysterectomy is required. Because fibroids have a significant blood supply, there is a high risk of intraoperative bleeding and related complications. Additionally, the most common complication in these patients after the operation is bleeding. In many of these patients, intraoperative or postoperative blood transfusions are performed. If bleeding cannot be intervened early in these patients, hemodynamic instability, shock, coagulopathy, and, in the final stage, death can occur due to hemorrhage. Therefore, both intraoperative and postoperative bleeding control is of vital importance in patients undergoing myomectomy.

This study examined long-term incidence rates of major bleeding associated with hepatectomy. The investigators used data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who underwent hepatectomy between 2000 and 2012 were identified by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Variables including gender, age, comorbidities, and prescribed medications were matched between cases and controls. A total of 1,053 patients with hepatectomy and 4,212 matched non-hepatectomy subjects were included in this study.

Tonsillectomies are frequently followed by severe postoperative pain, hence high analgetics consumption and prolonged hospitalization. Also, postoperative hemorrhages can be hazardous. Constant evaluation of surgical techniques is paramount to improve safety and cost-effectiveness. Frequently tonsillectomies are performed in cold steel technique. Aim of this study will be the evaluation of handling, surgical time, postoperative pain and postoperative hemorrhage rates using the BiZactTM-Device in comparison to traditional techniques on the contralateral side. In one patient, two different techniques will be used. The primary objective will be the surgical time. Regardless of surgeon handedness, surgeons will randomly be assigned to either start with the left or right tonsil, and randomly either to start with the BiZact™ Device or with "cold steel" methods. Additionally, time to stop bleeding, intraoperative blood loss, tonsil mobility, device handling, as well as wound healing will be assessed.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is associated with complications in form of infections and subsequently dehiscence of the vault. This is a serious complication. The infection may be related to the frequently observed postoperative hematoma following traditional laparoscopic hysterectomy where the uterine artery is coagulated and divided at the cervical entry into the uterus. By coagulation of the uterine artery laterally close to the internal iliac artery this problem may be eliminated due to the much less bleeding observed during this procedure.

A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded pilot study is planned. Neonates undergoing surgeries requiring cardiopulmonary bypass will receive antithrombin III (ATIII) supplementation or placebo in addition to standard anticoagulation with heparin as currently practiced at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. We plan to enroll the first 60 sequential patients meeting criteria who consent to inclusion. The primary outcomes will be rates of adverse events to monitor safety. Secondary outcomes include volume of postoperative blood loss and packed red blood cell transfusion during the first 24 postoperative hours, and ATIII levels during and after bypass to determine pharmacokinetics.
