The purpose of this study is to compare Dichlorphenamide with placebo (an inactive substance) for prevention of episodes and for improvement of strength in hyperkalemic (HYP) and hypokalemic (HOP) periodic paralysis. This study will also look at the long-term effects of Dichlorphenamide in periodic paralysis.
NCT01117454
The purpose of this study is to test whether the addition of oral flecainide to standard therapy will reduce ventricular ectopy on exercise test compared to placebo plus standard therapy in patients with Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia.
NCT02115256
Breech presentation of a term pregnancy is a common occurrence. A procedure known as external cephalic version (ECV) is frequently used by obstetricians to turn the baby into the vertex position prior to delivery in order to avoid a cesarean section and the associated risks. Medications to relax the uterus, known as tocolytics, are used in conjunction with the procedure as they have been shown to improve the success rate of ECV, but with inconsistent, varying results.
NCT00731692
The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether FTY720 is effective in delaying MS disability progression compared to placebo in patients with PPMS. This was an open-label, single-arm extension study to a double-blind, randomized multicenter, placebo-controlled, parallel-group core study. The core study completed and eligible patients enrolled into the extension study at the next scheduled or unscheduled core study visit. All patients, regardless of their treatment in the core study, received fingolimod 0.5 mg in the extension study. The extension study was terminated early after the results of the core study became available showing that the study did not meet its primary endpoint which was defined as confirmed disability progression in this population
NCT00548548
This study will compare treatment with bevacizumab in combination with capecitabine and cisplatin versus placebo in combination with capecitabine and cisplatin, as first-line therapy in patients with locally advanced or metastatic gastric cancer who had not received prior chemotherapy for advanced or metastatic disease.
NCT00948636
The study tests the hypothesis that related hematopoietic stem cell donors are at a higher risk for acute medical and psychological toxicity associated with the donation process compared to adult unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors. The study will also assess the hypothesis that young (\<18 years) and older (\>60 years) related donors are at increased risk for toxicity associated with donation compared to younger adult donors by describing the adverse events reported in these populations. An ancillary study of the psychological impact of donation on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) will enroll related donors and compare them to an age-matched normative cohort.
NCT00357331
Skeletal buffering of chronic acid loads may contribute to a significant amount of bone loss over time. Evidence from a few small short-term studies suggests that basic compounds, namely potassium citrate and potassium bicarbonate may reduce bone loss and improve bone density. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of potassium citrate on bone metabolism. We hypothesize that administration of potassium citrate to postmenopausal women with osteopenia will reduce bone resorption and improve bone mineral density. Postmenopausal women with osteopenia (T score between -1.0 and -2.5) and no history of fracture will be randomized to either daily potassium citrate or placebo for one year. Primary outcomes will be markers of bone turnover, which will be measured over 12 months. Secondary outcomes will be bone mineral density, compliance, and adverse events.
NCT00831116
In April 2008, a coronary catheter based imaging system, LipiScan, was cleared by the FDA for use in detecting lipid core containing containing plaques of interest (LCP). These plaques are rich in cholesterol. The way that cholesterol and other lipids deposit with the coronary artery is unique to each patient. This study is an organized attempt to observe the LCP and the variety of ways that it presents in patients as detected by this recently approved device. This information will be used for physician training and to observe the behavior of the LCP in response to no therapy and currently approved therapies. The purpose of this project is further medical knowledge of the LCP and its treatment.
NCT02291679
The objective of this trial was to determine the efficacy and safety of linaclotide 72 ug administered once daily to patients with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). The primary efficacy parameter is the percentage of participants in each dosing group that meet the protocol definition for complete spontaneous bowel movement (CSBM) Overall Responder.
NCT02429258
Effect of Dapagliflozin on 24-hour Blood Glucose in Type 2 Diabetes Patients Inadequately Controlled With Either Metformin Or Insulin
NCT01611285
Within the general objective of investigating optimal medical techniques for pelvic prolapse repair, this study proposes to: (1) test the hypothesis that the UPHOLD procedure is more cost effective than robotic surgery for pelvic prolapse repair (2)using formal decision analysis as the comparative strategy
NCT01320631
The correction of the pelvic organ protrusion is aimed at restoring the pelvic floor functional status and ultimately improving the patient's quality of life. There are a few studies that have explored the effect of pelvic reconstructive surgery on female sexual function (1,2) but no studies have evaluated the male partner's sexual experience. The investigators intend to use a newly psychometrically validated questionnaire to capture this aspect. The sexual experience questionnaire (SEX-Q) is the first questionnaire to solely and exclusively combine functional and quality of life concepts (erection, individual satisfaction, and couple satisfaction domains) in a brief questionnaire, which allows a more focused and less burdensome evaluation of the sexual experience in men (3). Another issue is the density of the mesh material and if it can be felt vaginally even if it is not eroded and to what degree this might bother the male partner during intercourse.
NCT01772368
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the dose response, efficacy, and safety of 4 different doses of salmeterol Spiromax (6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50 mcg) each combined with a fixed dose of fluticasone propionate (100 mcg) delivered as Fluticasone/Salmeterol Spiromax® Inhalation Powder (FS Spiromax) when administered as a single dose in subjects 12 years of age and older with persistent asthma.
NCT00984308
Sleep apnea is common among Veterans with cerebrovascular disease (stroke or transient ischemic attack \[TIA\]), leads to hypertension, and is associated with recurrent stroke and death. Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) safely treats sleep apnea, few Veterans with cerebrovascular disease are diagnosed with sleep apnea or offered treatment.
NCT00534365
The purpoe of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of the tension-free vaginal tape procedure (TVT) to the TVT-SECUR procedure in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence.
NCT01282242
This study was jointly developed and is jointly led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital and the intramural division of NINDS. We are doing this research study to find out if Activase ® (also called alteplase or rt-PA) can safely be given to people with an acute ischemic stroke when their stroke onset was not witnessed making them ineligible for standard thrombolytic (clot busting) therapy. We also want to find out if rt-PA can help people recover better from their stroke. The purpose of this study is to: 1) see if it is safe to give intravenous (IV) rt-PA to people with unwitnessed stroke but with MRI evidence of early ischemic stroke, 2) see if rt-PA is effective if given to people who are selected for treatment based on MRI evidence of an early stroke, and 3) get information about this new MRI diagnostic methods for guiding stroke treatment.
NCT01984775
This study is conducted to assess the potential of topically-applied GSK2894512 cream at 3 concentrations (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) to induce skin irritation at the site of application in healthy subjects. Results from this study will be considered when selecting the concentration(s) of GSK2894512 to evaluate in the Phase II and Phase III clinical safety and efficacy studies. Approximately 40 subjects will be enrolled in order to have at least 30 evaluable subjects complete the study. The total duration of subject participation may be up to 50 days.
