Arimoclomol is a small molecule that upregulates "molecular chaperones" in cells under stress. Arimoclomol extends survival by five weeks when given both pre-symptomatically and at disease onset in a mutant superoxide dismutase (SOD1) transgenic mouse model of ALS. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated to have neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects in other rat models of nerve damage. Molecular chaperone proteins are critical in the cellular response to stress and protein misfolding. Recent data suggest that the SOD1 mutation responsible for ALS in some patients with familial disease reduces the availability of a variety of molecular chaperones, and thus weakens their ability to respond to cellular stress. Protein misfolding and consequent aggregation may play a role in the pathogenesis of both the familial and sporadic forms of ALS. Therapeutic agents such as arimoclomol that improve cellular chaperone response to protein misfolding may be helpful in ALS.

The objective of this SAMMPRIS-affiliated study is to understand the mechanisms the mechanisms that underlie ischemic stroke recurrence in high-grade intracranial atherosclerotic disease in order to determine predictors of recurrent stroke. MoSIS will evaluate 6 specific mechanisms of stroke in the medically-treated SAMMPRIS cohort: decreased antegrade flow, progression of stenosis, decreased proximal collateral flow, decreased distal collateral flow, impaired cerebrovascular reserve, and artery-to-artery embolism.

TAXUS ATLAS is a global, multi-center, single-arm, non-inferiority trial comparing results from patients treated with the TAXUS Liberté stent to an historical TAXUS Express control. The control group is a case-matched, blended population of TAXUS Express patients from the TAXUS IV and TAXUS V de novo clinical trials. The objective of the study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of TAXUS Liberté-SR stent in de novo lesions and to assess the non-inferiority of TAXUS Liberté versus TAXUS Express.
