NCT00279981
The purpose of this study is to look at the heart rate and rhythm information collected daily in Medtronic implantable pulse generators (IPG), implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices. The study will gather this information from many patients to see if heart rate or rhythm data can predict the risk of a patient having a medical condition such as stroke.
NCT00341783
There are about 300-500 million cases of malaria worldwide each year, with 2-3 million deaths. Plasmodium falciparum, one of four types of malaria, is responsible for most of these deaths. Because of increasing resistance of this parasite to drugs and of mosquitoes to insecticides, a vaccine would be valuable in the fight against malaria. Don gu bougou, Mali, is an area of seasonal malaria transmission that is being investigated as a possible suitable site for testing investigational malaria vaccines. The goal of this study is to characterize the population of this site in terms of common hematologic (blood) and biochemistry parameters that may be used to determine eligibility for participation in vaccine trials. The study will also assess the prevalence of preexisting medical conditions that might affect assessments of vaccine safety and efficacy. Also, the natural immunity to antigens in the investigational malaria vaccines will be determined. Don gu bougou, Mali, was chosen because of its high malaria rates. Data will be collected at four time-points. At least 50 individuals will be recruited from each of the following age groups: 6 months-5 years; 6-10 years; 11-15 years; and 16-45 years. Village-wide consent will be obtained and about 25 of the 111 family compounds will be randomly selected. Individual consent will also be obtained. Enrolled volunteers will undergo a baseline medical history and physical examination. Blood will be collected for various tests, and, for women of childbearing age, urine pregnancy tests will be administered. At each of three followup visits, a brief medical history and physical exam will be conducted. Blood will be drawn for tests. Also, blood, urine, and/or stool tests not done at baseline will be done at one of the followup visits.
NCT00083447
TransMID treatment or best standard of care for patients with advanced glioblastoma multiforme Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a type of brain tumour. GBM tumours are usually treated with surgery and radiotherapy. Unfortunately, this type of brain tumour may continue to grow or come back (recur) despite treatment. This trial will compare a new drug called TransMID with the best standard treatment that is currently available. TransMID is a drug that is a combination of a protein called transferrin and a poison called diphtheria toxin. Cancer cells need iron in order to continue to grow. They need more iron than normal cells. Transferrin helps cells to take up available iron. So the cancer cells are attached to the transferrin in TransMID, and the diphtheria poison kills them. The aim of this treatment is to kill the cancer cells while not affecting the normal brain cells. This treatment for brain tumours may have fewer side effects than other treatments because it targets cancer cells. The best standard treatment will involve giving chemotherapy. You may have chemotherapy as part of the treatment when you are diagnosed. Or it may be kept in reserve to treat your brain tumour if it comes back or continues to grow. Your cancer specialist (consultant) will decide which chemotherapy drugs you should have.
NCT00275769
This study compares the pacemaker's automatic pacing threshold measurements to the manual measurements conducted by a health care provider.
NCT00075894
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as alanosine, use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of alanosine in treating patients with high-grade progressive or recurrent malignant gliomas.
NCT00307515
A comparison of fibrin sealant 2 versus Surgicel® as an addition to standard surgical practice in stopping mild to moderate soft tissue bleeding during retroperitoneal or intra-abdominal surgery.
NCT00705562
The objective of the study is to assess comparative gastrointestinal tolerance of normal term infants to various milk-protein infant formulas.
NCT00081380
The purpose of this study is to determine whether quetiapine when used as adjunct to lithium or divalproex is safe and effective in the maintenance treatment of adult patients with Bipolar I Disorder. The study consists of enrollment and 2 phases, the Open-label treatment Phase and the Randomized treatment Phase. PLEASE NOTE: Seroquel SR and Seroquel XR refer to the same formulation. The SR designation was changed to XR after consultation with FDA.
NCT00088088
This study is for patients who have Stage IIIb or Stage IV NSCLC and have never had chemotherapy before for their disease. The first phase of the study recently completed and for the second phase of the study patients are randomly assigned to receive either paclitaxel and carboplatin or paclitaxel and carboplatin and study drug (STA 4783). Treatment will be every 3 weeks for 6 cycles.
NCT00800228
The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that blood pressure sensitivity to high sodium intake in healthy humans is characterized by increased urinary excretion of two endogenous sodium pump inhibitors, marinobufagenin (MBG), and ouabain-like compound (OLC). The study also tests the hypothesis that women who breathe slowly and have high resting end tidal CO2 at rest are more likely to have low plasma renin activity and sodium sensitivity of blood pressure than those who breathe more rapidly and maintain lower end tidal CO2.
NCT00635375
Hyperbilirubinemia is a common problem for term and preterm newborns in intensive care nurseries around the world. It is a condition in which there is too much bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a substance that is naturally released when red blood cells break down. In the early newborn period, multiple factors lead to an abnormally elevated bilirubin level. Large amounts of bilirubin can circulate to tissues in the brain and may cause seizures or brain damage. About 6.1% of term newborns and a higher percentage of preterm newborns develop hyperbilirubinemia that requires treatment. Initiating treatment depends on many factors, including the cause of the hyperbilirubinemia, the level of serum indirect bilirubin, the rate of indirect bilirubin rise, and the age of the patient. The goal of treatment is to keep the level of bilirubin from rising to dangerous levels. The bilirubin molecule absorbs light. Therefore, treatment of hyperbilirubinemia involves exposure of the baby's skin to special blue spectrum light. Phototherapy is globally recognized as the standard of care for treatment of elevated indirect hyperbilirubinemia in the neonatal period. This light exposure converts water-insoluble indirect bilirubin to a more easily excreted soluble molecule. Over the last five years, several devices have been introduced that emit high intensity light in the blue portion of the visible light spectrum. However, despite frequent use of such therapy, the effectiveness of different phototherapy devices has not been adequately compared. The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of the blue LED fiberoptic phototherapy with the metal halide spot phototherapy versus blue LED bank light phototherapy versus a combination of tandem therapy on lowering to total serum bilirubin.
NCT00274313
