NCT01598168
Heparin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that is commonly used to treat patients with heart attacks and patients with blood clots in their legs or lungs (venous thrombosis). Some patients develop an allergic reaction to heparin, a condition called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). HIT makes blood clot, which is the opposite of what heparin was designed to do. These blood clots can lead to heart attacks, strokes, limb amputations, and death. The objective of this 200 patient study is to determine if a new blood thinner called rivaroxaban (Xarelto) can be used to treat HIT. Rivaroxaban can be taken by mouth, does not require blood testing, and had a low risk of bleeding when it was used to treat blood clots in other clinical trials. If this study shows that rivaroxaban can be used to treat HIT, there will be two very important benefits. For patients with HIT, the benefit will be having a safe, and easy-to-use drug to protect them from developing further life or limb-threatening blood clots. For the Canadian health care system, the benefit will be having a drug that is much less expensive than the drugs currently used to treat HIT.
NCT01962909
The purpose of this clinical trial is to study an experimental drug called PTP-01 that is being used as an imaging agent to diagnosis pancreatic cancer. Currently, pancreatic cancer is diagnosed using CT or MRI scans which miss small pancreatic cancers, particularly early stage disease. Researchers at the University of Virginia have identified a biomarker for pancreatic cancer called plectin, which is very specific for pancreatic cancer and not other, non-cancerous conditions involving the pancreas. These researchers have also developed PTP-01, an experimental drug that may be used with SPECT imaging to detect pancreatic cancer cells in humans.
NCT00005281
To continue to evaluate risk factors heretofore determined to be important predictors of chronic respiratory symptoms, diagnosis of asthma, and alterations in expected levels of lung function in children and adolescents in a new population of young adult women.
NCT00005284
To prospectively identify factors that influence the rate of decline in pulmonary function and to identify predictors of chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD) and asthma in a population sample of older adults.
NCT00005411
To continue analysis of data from a longitudinal study of 246 urban Black preschool children and their families in order to identify the long-term effects of social and environmental influences on nutrition and activity and the consequences of these influences for the children's cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk status.
NCT00005425
To determine the effects in early adulthood of asthma, increased bronchial responsiveness, markers of allergy and smoking on pulmonary function level and the effects of these same risk factors on subsequent decline in pulmonary function, because these early adult factors presumably profoundly influence the risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
NCT00005537
To perform a genome-wide search for genes affecting two phenotypes related to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a Chinese population.
NCT01684566
To compare the performance of standard of care (SOC) + episil® versus SOC alone on oral mucositis in patients receiving conditioning treatment for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The primary variable will be the area under the curve (AUC) of oral mucositis scores defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) oral toxicity scale assessed daily by the investigator over the 28-day study period.
NCT02287181
A prospective, randomised, phase IV trial including 150 patients. To evaluate the effects of varied concentrations of remifentanil on the proposal requirements for the loss of consciousness and response to pain and to evaluate the haemodynamic changes and processed EEG (BIS) during induction of anaesthesia.
NCT02244879
This research will investigate the effect of resveratrol on inflammatory mediators in type 2 diabetic patients in vivo. The investigators will also investigate the hypothesis that resveratrol has an antioxidant activity, improves insulin sensitivity and lipid pattern, down-regulates bone-turnover.
NCT01246973
The purpose of the study is to determine whether curcumin, an ingredient of some foods, can prevent or reduce the severity of skin reactions (dermatitis) caused by radiation therapy. Dermatitis is a common side effect of radiation treatment, but few effective treatments have been developed for it. Curcumin is a natural compound found in both turmeric and curry powder. It has been used for centuries as a spice (curry), a food coloring and as a food preservative. Curcumin is non-toxic and has been found to enhance the functions of normal tissues..
NCT02025777
Study Hypothesis UC Disease affects the colon. PillCam IBD may be used for visualization of the colon mucosa in UC Disease patients. This study is designed to evaluate the yield and clinical impact of IBD capsule in detecting lesions associated with UC Disease and to determine the agreement between PillCam Platform with the IBD capsule and optical colonoscopy in the evaluation of UC disease extent. Primary Scientific Objective To evaluate the agreement between PillCam IBD system and optical colonoscopy in the evaluation of UC disease extent (Non-active disease, Proctitis, Left-sided colitis, Pancolitis) Proposed Design Established UC disease patients whose clinical condition suggests ongoing disease activity, aged 18 years and up, who have no evidence of symptomatic stricture or other obstruction that would prevent capsule passage will be enrolled in this study. Patients will undergo bowel prep, followed by a PillCam IBD capsule examination and colonoscopy examination. The Rapid videos will be evaluated by two readers, each from a different site, the colonoscopy videos will be evaluated by two other physicians, at the sites INCLUSION CRITERIA All subjects must fulfill all of the following inclusion criteria: * Patients ages 18 years and up * Patient has known UC according to physician discretion * Patient has at least one positive inflammatory marker from the following: * ESR * CRP * CBC * Patient is indicated and eligible for a standard of care colonoscopy examination * Patient agrees to sign consent form EXCLUSION CRITERIA The presence of any of the following will exclude a patient from study enrollment: * Crohn's Disease * Antibiotic Associated Colitis * Stool positive for O\&P (C\&S within 3 months of enrollment) * Other known infectious cause of increased symptoms * Known intestinal obstruction or current obstructive symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain with accompanying nausea or vomiting. * Definite long stricture seen on radiological exam. * Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including Aspirin, (twice weekly or more) during the 4 weeks preceding enrollment * Suspected GI stricture, followed by patency capsule study or other imaging study that could not prove patency of the GI tract. * Patient has had prior abdominal surgery of the gastrointestinal tract in the last 6 months, other than uncomplicated procedures that would be unlikely to lead to bowel obstruction based on the clinical judgment of the investigator. * Patient is expected to undergo MRI examination within 7 days after ingestion of the capsule. * Patient with known gastrointestinal motility disorders. * Subjects with known or suspected delayed gastric emptying * Patient suffers from any condition, such as swallowing problems, which precludes compliance with study and/or device instructions. * Patient has Type 1 or Type II Diabetes. * Patient has any allergy or other known contraindication to the medications used in the study. * Patient has any condition, which precludes compliance with study and/or device instructions. * Women who are either pregnant or nursing at the time of screening, or are of child-bearing potential and do not practice medically acceptable methods of contraception. * Concurrent participation in another clinical trial using any investigational drug or device. * Patient suffers from a life threatening condition * Patients with history or clinical evidence of renal disease and/or previous clinically significant laboratory abnormalities of renal function parameters.
NCT00901108
The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of Trabectome versus Trabeculectomy with adjunctive Mitomycin C, combined with cataract surgery, in patients with open angle glaucoma.
NCT02096822
Preterm infants undergo very frequent painful procedures during neonatal care particularly during the first few days. The support for the pain of the preterm is a priority for nurses and neonatologists. Previous studies showed that non-nutritive sucking combined with sucrose ensures effective pain-relief for preterm (28-32 weeks GA). Unfortunately, the use of sucrose is limited to 4 administrations per day which is insufficient compared to the average of daily painful procedures. So, validation of an effective non-pharmacological intervention to relieve or avoid pain is essential. Facilitated tucking alone has been validated for preterm less than 37 GA during heel stick procedure with the PIPP score but no study looks for the benefit for pain relief of the association of non-nutritive sucking and facilitated tucking during heel stick procedure.
NCT02683733
Inflammatory Bowel Disease, including ulcerative colitis, is thought to result from an imbalance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory factors. As such, the majority of treatment options are directed at attempting to control the chronic inflammation and prolonging remission of clinical symptoms. Several studies have proven that curcumin has well-established anti-inflammatory properties. However, curcumin has poor bioavailability and prior studies have needed to use high concentrations in order to study the efficacy of the product. The investigators propose that a bio-enhanced preparation of curcumin will require a lower dosage to reach and affect its target tissue and will subsequently produce less adverse side effects.
NCT01737164
Aging is a major risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Approximately 50% of subjects aged ≥65 have diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, a pre-diabetic state. Purpose: In the proposed study, the investigators will test the hypotheses that the decrease in fat oxidation that occurs in muscle from older human subjects is secondary to an age-mediated reduction in AMPK signaling, in vivo, and that upregulating AMPK signaling through exercise training will result in (and correlate with) increased fat oxidation, reduced intramyocellular lipids, and improved insulin action.
