RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Bone marrow transplantation may allow doctors to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. It is not yet known whether high dose chemotherapy plus bone marrow transplantation is more effective than high dose chemotherapy alone for intermediate- or high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of high dose chemotherapy with or without bone marrow transplantation in treating patients who have intermediate- or high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to determine the effectiveness of LED therapy in preventing mucositis of the mouth in children who are receiving chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy before donor bone marrow transplantation.

Monoclonal antibodies such as rituximab can locate cancer cells and either kill them or deliver cancer-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. It is not yet known if combination chemotherapy plus peripheral stem cell transplantation is more effective with or without rituximab for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying giving combination chemotherapy and peripheral stem cell transplantation together with rituximab to see how well it works compared to combination chemotherapy and peripheral stem cell transplantation alone in treating patients with relapsed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

It is not yet known if chlorambucil is more effective than radiation therapy in treating follicular lymphoma. RATIONALE: Giving low-dose total-body irradiation before a donor stem cell transplant helps stop the growth of cancer cells. It also stops the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. The donated stem cells may replace the patient's immune cells and help destroy any remaining cancer cells (graft-versus-tumor effect). PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects of donor stem cell transplant after total-body irradiation and to see how well it works in treating patients with relapsed or refractory hematologic cancer or acute myeloid leukemia or acute lymphocytic leukemia in complete remission.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the maximum tolerated dose of dexamethasone given for 5 consecutive days when combined with fixed doses of irinotecan (given IV, qd x 5, 2 days off, qd x 5) and vincristine (given IV, 2 doses total on days 1 and 8 of schedule) in children with relapsed or refractory hematologic malignancies. In addition we will also study the pharmacokinetics of irinotecan when given without and then with dexamethasone in each patient, evaluate the relationship between irinotecan pharmacokinetic parameters and toxicity and describe any antitumor effects.

PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying chlorambucil to see how well it works compared with fludarabine as first-line therapy in treating patients with previously untreated Waldenström macroglobulinemia, splenic lymphoma, or lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma.

The purpose of this study is to determine efficacy of intrathecal mafosfamide, a preactivated derivative of cyclophosphamide against meningeal malignancies refractory to conventional therapy (radiation therapy and chemotherapy). The maximally tolerated dose for intrathecal mafosfamide will be established in a limited dosage escalation schedule. The CSF pharmacokinetics of intrathecal mafosfamide will also be studied. Mafosfamide will be administered intrathecally on a bi-weekly basis for four weeks, followed by twice monthly administration for four months and then monthly IT administration. A minimum of 9 patients will be studied in each disease category (leukemias, lymphomas, and other malignancies refractory to conventional therapy).

To determine the number of apheresis procedures, total stem cell yield/kg patient body weight and the toxicity profile in the two groups. Secondary Objectives: 1. To determine the degree of expression of various adhesion molecules in the 2 groups and correlate with time to engraftment of neutrophils, platelets, and red blood cells, efficacy of stem cell mobilization and purging. 2.
