A major means whereby oxidative stress promotes aging-related disease is by activating inflammatory pathways. Decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation should ameliorate many of the problems associated with aging, including vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, muscle wasting, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Animal and human studies have demonstrated that consumption of vitamin D and phase 2 protein inducers decrease oxidative stress and associated inflammation. The flax lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) is metabolized to enterolactone, a potent phase 2 protein inducer. Animal and human studies have shown that consumption of flax seed or its component SDG decreases hypertension, serum cholesterol, atherosclerosis, the growth of experimentally-induced cancers as well as metastases of human breast tumours implanted into nude mice, and delays the development of type 2 diabetes. Vitamin D plays a role in modulating inflammation, enhancing immunity (while suppressing autoimmune injury) and exerting control over cell differentiation. Adequate levels of vitamin D also appear to promote better glycemic control. The investigators predict that consumption of SDG in persons with adequate vitamin D status will decrease oxidative stress and associated inflammation. If this hypothesis is upheld, this research has the potential to greatly decrease healthcare costs while allowing healthier aging.

The study deals with evaluation of safety and efficacy of use of stem/stromal cell isolates from autologous microvasculature in neurological, non-neoplastic disease. Autologous cells are acquired via microcannula aspiration of subdermal fat deposits, isolated through a digestive process, and concentrated via standard centrifugation. The cellular stromal vascular fraction (cSVF) created is neutralized and rinsed to eliminate residual enzymatic molecules. These cells are suspending in sterile Normal Saline Solution (500cc) and re-administered via an intravenous parenteral route, passed through a standard sterile 150 u (micron) filter in line. Multiple tracking and questionnaire followup is intended over a 5 year period, with objective and subjective criteria being met. Compilation and analysis of data to be completed after that period.

This is a Phase 1, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6-period crossover study to evaluate the effects of BPN14770 10 mg and 50 mg in reversing scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in healthy volunteers. A positive control, donepezil 10 mg, will be included, and additivity of BPN14770 50 mg to donepezil 10 mg in reversing scopolamine effects will also be evaluated.

Conformance with the guidance includes general study design using a randomized, open label, single-dose warfarin, steady-state Dimebon, 2-sequence, 2-treatment, 2-period crossover design with a minimum 7-day washout period between treatments.

The purpose of this study is to learn about how trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and mild traumatic brain injury that can occur during deployment affect the brain. The investigators also want to learn how PTSD and mild traumatic brain injury can affect the chance of developing Alzheimer disease later in life. The investigators will study this by using magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography scans to obtain pictures of the brain.

Individuals with uncontrolled vascular disease are at risk for an insidious progression of brain injury starting in early to midlife and ultimately culminating in a vascular dementia, robbing them of activities of daily living independence. Successful containment of this progression requires rigorous vascular risk factor management - the control of blood pressure, blood sugars, weight, and alcohol consumption; the cessation of smoking, and an increase in aerobic activity. The research question for this study is whether golf is a suitable physical activity for people with dementia (PWD). It follows a qualitative pilot study in Lincoln where PWD enjoyed the activity and caregivers appreciated the service. Golf combines many desirable elements in a physical activity programme that include being outdoors, social, cognitively challenging, no reaction-time component, and being a typical everyday activity. The length of time that golf sessions last could also offer a potential respite from care for caregivers. Participants will be people with dementia and their caregivers. Eligibility criteria will include having been clinically diagnosed with dementia, being able to stand on one leg for at least six seconds to ensure participants are able to balance sufficiently well to be able to play golf. The study will be undertaken at The London Shire Golf Club, with the golf training provided by the Golf Trust, which is a charitable foundation experienced in providing golf training to people with a range of different disabilities. The randomised controlled trial study will last 16 weeks, with a partial crossover design. The experimental group with have two eight-week periods of golf while the control group will have eight weeks without golf, then the golf intervention. There will be two 150-min sessions each week, starting with 30 minutes socialising, then 90 minutes playing golf, then 30 minutes socialising. The golf sessions will progress from putting, to chipping, and then a full swing, with sessions taking place on a nine-hole golf course. Participants will be evaluated before and after each eight-week period for physical function, physical activity level, cognitive function, and quality of life. Their caregivers will also provide information related to the PWD in terms of quality of life and psychopathology in dementia, as well as their own quality of life.

The primary objective of this study is to determine whether a Person Centred Care online training programme confers significant benefit in terms of improving staff attitudes and quality of care of residents with dementia living in care homes, in comparison to enhanced usual training for professional care staff. There is considerable interest in e-learning and dementia from care home providers. Significant investment has been made into the production of resources for care staff but to date there appears to be no, or very limited, evaluation of their effectiveness. The aim is to provide a cost-effective, simple and practical evidence-based intervention, improving staff attitudes towards residents with dementia and quality of care provision. The trial will be a randomized controlled 3-arm cluster single blind trial that will take place over 9 months in 24 care homes in the UK.
