Timely creation of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is preferred for patients requiring maintenance hemodialysis. Many patients in Egypt initiate hemodialysis with temporary catheters. This hospital-based cross-sectional study will assess the level of knowledge regarding AVF creation among adults with advanced CKD (stage 4-5 not on dialysis and patients on maintenance hemodialysis).
A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire will be used to evaluate current awareness in pre-dialysis patients and retrospectively assessed pre-dialysis awareness in current hemodialysis patients.

Age 18 years or older
Documented chronic kidney disease
CKD stage 4-5 not on maintenance hemodialysis OR currently on maintenance hemodialysis for established CKD
Able to understand and answer the questionnaire
Written informed consent

Acute kidney injury without established CKD
Previous kidney transplantation (if considered to affect homogeneity)
Severe cognitive or communication impairment preventing reliable questionnaire completion
Unable or unwilling to provide informed consent
Inability to provide reasonably reliable information about the pre-dialysis period (for retrospective questions)
